Ductile Iron (also known as Spheroidal graphite iron or Nodular Cast Iron) was invented in 1949. Ductile Iron retains the corrosion resistance of cast iron but has more than double the tensile strength [Cast Iron- 180 MPa (min), Ductile Iron - 420 MPa (min)]. The main differences between Ductile and Cast Iron lies in the shape of the graphite in the microstructure of the metal. In Cast Iron Pipe, the graphite is present in plate-like flakes, which makes Cast Iron brittle. But its measured that in Ductile iron pipes, the shape of the graphite becomes a spheroidal nodule, which exhibit better mechanical properties, due to this feature it becomes Ductile Iron sturdy, Structurally stronger and shock-proof.

These weights are based on minimum class (thickness class 51 for 3" and 4" and class 50 for 6" through 54") ductile iron pipe with minimum thickness standard cement lining as specified in awwa c104 and on weight of water of 62.4 Pounds per cubic foot. The inside diameters are as given in table 1.

Tolerances for iron thickness

Tolerances are given depending on the device, pipes or fittings, and DN in the table opposite, which gives the tolerance less (for the calculation of the minimum thickness.)
Standards EN 545 and ISO 2531 do not stipulate an upper limit.
This thickness complies with EN 545 and ISO 2531.
